VIETNAM: Southern electricity project scaled down

A National Assembly (NA) Committee yesterday gave support to plans to scrap four of the 15 components originally set as part of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Gas-Power-Fertiliser Project because they are no longer cost effective.

The NA Science, Technology and Environment Committee discussed a recent proposal submitted by the Government detailing a list of potential changes to the gas-electricity project.

In addition, the Government proposed to adjust the project’s strategy to meet current power demands more efficiently.

The national project was originally approved by the NA 10 years ago under Resolution 06/1997/QH10.

Workers built a gas pipeline from the Nam Con Son, Bach Ho and Rang Dong Natural Gas Reserves off the coast of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to a distribution centre on shore.

Around 7 billion litres of gas is pumped to six power stations with a combined electricity production capacity of 4,000 megawatts per year. They account for approximately one third of the country’s total electricity. The project also built a plant that makes fertiliser.

The Government’s activity report, given to the committee alongside the proposal, shows though only eight objectives have been met, the project is still operating above expectations in many respects, according to committee members.

But there is still much to do as the deputies called on officials to continue to work on implementing the remaining project goals safely and effectively.
