The Public Investment Board has given a nod to 1,000-MW coal based thermal power station, to be jointly executed by Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Tuticorin, a top NLC official said on Wednesday.
The project was now awaiting sanction from the Centre, NLC Chairman S Jayaraman said in his Independence Day address at the Bharathi Stadium here.
He said NLC had recorded a sales turnover of Rs 2,610.26 crore in 2006-07, compared to Rs 2,502.02 crore in 2005-06. Net profit was Rs 566.78 crore for 2006-07 against Rs 702.35 crore in 2005-06, he added.
Work was in progress on a 500-MW power station and lignite mine at Neyveli. "Lignite production and power generation will start at the end of 2009," he said.
