Scores of families were hit and there was traffic chaos on the roads last night following a power cut in many areas in the kingdom for almost four hours. A malfunction in a power line at the Zinj sub-station caused blackouts in Zinj, Khamis, Tashan, Jidhafs, Sehla, Ghufool and Salmaniya.
Though no major accidents were reported, eight Asian labourers from Tashan and Sehla were taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex suffering from heat exhaustion. One of them was in a critical condition but stable last night, hospital sources said.
Electricity and Water Ministry under-secretary Dr Abdul Majeed Al Awadhi said the blackout took place between 5.30pm and 9.30pm.
Power was restored within two hours to all areas except Zinj and Khamis where it took another two hours for electricity to come back on.
"The automatic protection system that protects the power line was cut off because there was a malfunction," said Dr Al Awadhi.
"A team of ministry engineers rushed immediately to repair the malfunction and power was restored to all areas." Engineers were said to be working effortlessly to find the fault in the power line and repair it, he added.
