A fire aboard the Diamond Offshore Drilling semi-submersible drill rig, Ocean Guardian, forced its partial evacuation late on Tuesday, field operator Oilexco revealed today.
The fire was doust quickly, and no injuries resulted, but crew that could be evacuated without jeopardizing operations were moved to nearby platforms. Arrangements were being made on Wednesday for personnel returns to the Ocean Guardian.
The engine-room fire was reported at 18:20 U.K. time and was completely extinguished by the vessel's fire suppression system a short time later.
An investigation is nevertheless underway.
The Ocean Guardian is one of two drilling vessels under long-term contract to Oilexco and was conducting appraisal drilling of the Shelley oilfield on Blocks 22/2b and 22/3a. The incident did not impact production from the nearby Brenda-Nicol Fields.
