Alberta regulators have granted conditional approval for West Energy Ltd. to drill two sour crude oil wells southwest of Edmonton.
The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board said yesterday the company must comply with 10 conditions.
The conditions "will address public concerns raised during an 11-day hearing" that took place in Drayton Valley and ended May 14, the board said in a release.
One condition requires the company to update its emergency response plan for people who live in the area and conduct a comprehensive exercise of the plan under the review of board staff.
The company plans to drill the wells near Rocky Rapids, a small town north of Drayton Valley, about 130 km southwest of Edmonton. If the company fails the exercise, its well licences will be suspended.
West Energy must also build another escape route from the area to enhance public safety before drilling begins.
