VIETNAM: Nation acts to save 3-5 percent on energy use by 2010

Viet Nam is to launch a national programme on energy saving this year with the aim of cutting its total energy consumption volume by 3-5 percent, or equal to 5 million tonnes of equivalent oil, between now and 2010, and 5-8 percent from 2011-2015.

The programme, which was introduced by the Ministry of Industry at a press briefing in Ha Noi on Feb. 7, will be carried out nationwide through 30 projects with a combined capital of 30 billion VND (1.88 million USD).

The programme focuses on increasing State management and raising public awareness of energy saving. It also aims at encouraging the use of energy saving equipment and the efficient consumption of energy in production, business and transport activities as well as in the daily life.

According to experts, the implementation of the programme on a large scale will bring great benefits to Viet Nam as the country is facing energy shortages during its economic development process.
