ASIA-OCEANIA: Alliance with Australia will augment Russia’s opportunities in nuclear cooperation with other countries

“The alliance with Australia must contribute to increasing competitiveness of the production as well as augment our opportunities in cooperation with other countries in the nuclear field,” said Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Institute for strategic Stability Viktor Mikhailov commenting on signature of a Russian-Australian treaty on cooperation in peaceful nuclear technologies.

Our processing industry is powerful enough,” says Mikhailov. “Our centrifuge plants outstrip all known global technologies by 50% in average.” However, for planned development of the nuclear power engineering, Russia needs to buy fuel for nuclear power stations, despite the fact that the country has its own uranium reserves.

Signature of the intergovernmental treaty can be assessed as a good example of how Russia is entering the global market in a large scale,Mikhailov concluded.

Russia and Australia signed an intergovernmental agreement to cooperate in using atomic energy for peaceful purposes. The treaty says that the concept “peaceful purposes” includes using nuclear materials, equipment, components and technologies in energy produce, medicine, agriculture and industry.
