At talks between Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov and his visiting Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung Tuesday, the two sides agreed to establish a priority cooperation mechanism for specific projects, and assigned the Vietnam-Russia Inter-governmental Committee to set it up.
They also agreed to coordinate closely in regional and international forums like the UN, the ASEAN Regional Forum, and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to achieve a new, equitable, and democratic world order.
Dung hailed Russia’s role in dealing with international and regional issues and promised Vietnam’s support for its bid to join the World Trade Organization.
Fradkov said his government was eager to expand relations with Vietnam, which it considered a strategic partner in Southeast Asia.
Russia backed Vietnam’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 term.
Following their talks, the two PMs witnessed the signing of several pacts, including an agreement on the Vietsovpetro joint venture between the respective industry ministries, a cooperation plan between the foreign ministries, and a deal between the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) and Zarubezhneft to establish a joint venture for exploring for oil and gas in Russia and other countries.
Dung later met President Vladimir Putin who appreciated the results of the talks between Dung and Fradkov and the signing of the agreements.
Putin said Russia wanted to increase cooperation with Vietnam in areas of their respective strengths to bring the economic, trade, and investment relations on a par with their strong political ties.
He assured Dung that Russia would promote the strategic bilateral partnership in 2007.
Dung exchanged views with Putin on specific measures to further expand the multifaceted cooperation between the two countries in a range of areas like politics, diplomacy, military, economics, trade, investment, and science and technology.
He thanked the Russian government for taking care of the Vietnamese community in Russia.
Dung is scheduled to attend the Vietnam-Russia business forum Wednesday before leaving for the Czech Republic for a two-day visit.

Two new oilfields to be tapped in 2009, Vietsov Petro
Vietsov Petro (VSP), an oil and gas joint venture between Viet Nam and Russia, said it will start tapping oil at the Nam Rong-Doi Moi and Southern Central Rong oilfields in 2009.
At present, VSP and the Viet Nam-Russia-Japan Oil and Gas Company (VRJ) are boosting investment in the Nam Rong-Doi Moi oilfield which is estimated to hold 57 million cu.m of crude oil. The oilfield was discovered in 2005-2006.
In 2006, the company also found the Southern Central Rong oilfield which is estimated to be capable of providing more than 100,000 tonnes of crude oil per year.
The discoveries of the oilfields showed that the Rong area contains large oil reserves, which is expected to help maintain VSP’s oil output in the context that oil volume from Viet Nam’s largest oilfield, Bach Ho, is decreasing.
The company plans to turn out nearly 8.7 million tonnes of crude oil in 2007 and 7.1 million tonnes in 2008. Its outputs for 2009 and 2010 are estimated at 6.1 million tonnes and 5.2 million tonnes, respectively.
They also agreed to coordinate closely in regional and international forums like the UN, the ASEAN Regional Forum, and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to achieve a new, equitable, and democratic world order.
