Royal Dutch Shell PLC, one of the world's largest oil companies, said today it will begin work to more than double the production capacity of its joint-venture refinery in Port Arthur, Tex.
The expansion would make the refinery the largest in the United States, Shell said. The Port Arthur operation is run in co-operation with Saudi Refining Inc.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
"Shell's investment in the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery expansion will lead to increased supplies of gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels in the U.S.," the company said in a statement.
Shell expects the expansion to boost capacity by 325,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day to 600,000 barrels, making the refinery one of the largest in the world as well as the biggest in the U.S.
Shell shares were little changed at 2097 pence ($42.05) in trading today in London.
