TEXAS: British Petroleum worker describes horror of March 2005 blast

Richard Crofoot stoically told jurors today how he'd seen friends killed in Vietnam, but his lower lip trembled and his voice cracked when he talked about his friend Danny Hogan, who died in the March 2005 explosion at BP's Texas City refinery.

"In Vietnam, we knew you could die," he said, explaining how he could keep his composure when asked about other traumatic events. "I just felt on the job we were safe. We weren't going there to die."

Crofoot is one of eight plaintiffs suing BP for physical and emotional trauma suffered in the blast, which killed 15 and injured many others.

He was beginning to detail his injuries, including hearing loss, ruptured discs in his neck and back and testicular problems when the trial broke for lunch.

Earlier this morning, Cynthia Bahr, wife of plaintiff Steve Bahr, testified to corroborate her husband's emotional distress and suicidal thoughts since the explosion. He was a member of the volunteer fire department at the nearby Dow Chemical plant and responded to the BP fire.

"Sometimes I have to wake him up because he cries in his sleep or he's yelling in his sleep," Bahr said.
