MIDDLE EAST: Kuwait eyes Iraqi gas

Kuwait will hold fresh talks with Iraq over plans to buy Iraqi gas and does not rule out a year-end start for imports, a report said.

Kuwait has agreed to buy up to 200 million cubic feet of Iraqi gas per day in two stages to meet its rising power needs, starting with 25 million cubic feet in a first stage.

Iraq's political instability and pipeline repair work had held up the scheme.

'There are no major technical obstacles about the first stage of gas imports from Iraq ... there are only a few obstacles with regards to fixing the pipelines and they will be dealt with soon,' Kuwaiti oil ministry undersecretary Abbas Naqi told the daily Al Qabas.

Naqi, who heads Kuwaiti negotiators in talks with Iraq, said a joint committee will meet in three months for further discussions.

He did not rule out imports of Iraqi gas by year-end if progress is made in the talks.
