The leaders of Venezuela and Brazil are set to go head to head over energy production at today's summit of South American countries. The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has attacked the Brazilian President's plans for mass ethanol production across the continent, in partnership with the United States. Under Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva's leadership Brazil has pioneered the use of the bio-fuel. His aides say the President is passionate about it.
But Chavez, vehemently anti-Bush, is equally determined Latin America should concentrate on making the most of its traditional energy sources. Venezuela has huge oil reserves. It exports oil to the US. It also provides fuel to its neighbours at preferential tariffs. The two leaders are planning to discuss their differences at the summit on Margarita Island in Venezuela - but behind closed doors.
