CANADA: Technip to tackle Canadian oil sands upgrade

Paris-based process specialist Technip will transform heavy oil into crude at Fort Hills Oil Sands project near Edmonton, Canada after being awarded a contract by Fort Hills Energy on Thursday.

This job includes front-end engineering, detail engineering, procurement, construction and project management for the primary upgrader, which transforms heavy oil into lighter synthetic fuel.

The project covers a diluent recovery unit, or DRU, and a delayed coking unit. The DRU recovers solvent from diluted bitumen piped from a Fort Hills mine.

The coking unit upgrades heavy bitumen into lighter hydrocarbons via coke extraction.

Fort Hills is 55-percent Petro-Canada owned, 30-percent UTS Energy Corp. and 15-percent Teck Cominco.
