IRAN - TURKEY: A new agreement on energy cooperation

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Hilmi Guler and his Iranian counterpart Parviz Fattah on Tuesday signed an agreement on establishment of hydro-electric power plant and electricity networks.

The two ministers attended a joint press conference after the signing ceremony declaring the agreement as win-win.

Responding to a question about the US opposition to Iran-Turkey cooperation on energy, Guler said that the agreement serves Turkey's national interest and there is no place for any interference.

A reporter asked Fattah whether Iran has concerns over progress of the agreement on schedule due to the US opposition, Fattah said that there may be others who are displeased with Iran-Turkey cooperation, but, the two countries are independent and the opponents should know that the agreement is win-win for both sides.

The two countries will establish two commercial companies in Iran and Turkey to get involved in electricity business.

Guler said, "The agreement signed today will boost Iran-Turkey business in the energy sector to dlrs 10 billion from the current level of dlrs 7-8 billion."
