Formosa Petrochemical Corp., Taiwan's only publicly traded oil refiner, said it plans to shut one of its three ethylene plants for maintenance in September.
The plant, capable of making 1.03 million metric tons of ethylene a year from naphtha, is scheduled for an overhaul that will last between 40 days and 45 days starting Sept. 3, Lin Keh Yen, director of the president's office, said by telephone from Taipei.
Formosa Petrochemical, based in Yunlin, in May started one of Asia's largest ethylene plants, boosting the company's annual ethylene capacity to 2.93 million tons a year. CPC Corp., Taiwan's only other ethylene producer, can make 1.12 million tons of ethylene a year.
Ethylene, made from naphtha and gas, is a key ingredient in plastics and synthetic fibers.
