MIDDLE EAST: Surplus petrol supply not high on agenda: Majlis speaker

Majlis (Iran’s parliament) speaker here Wednesday announced that the supply of surplus petrol was not on top of the agenda.

Talking to reporters, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel added, “Recommendation for fuel consumption management means economization on gasoline use. “To this end, public transportation should be developed and buses, taxis, and underground shuttle services should increase in number.”

He expressed hope the gasoline rationing plan would be fully put into practice through cooperation of people and government’s effort and would yield positive results for the general public.

Haddad-Adel expressed his satisfaction with the enforcement of the rationing law, terming it as a major measure that had been so far successful.

People had been suffering from heavy traffic for years, said the Legislative head, adding the problem would be solved if the petrol rationing project worked.

Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Seyyed Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh said the current gasoline quota would meet 85 percent of people’s need.

On June 27, Iran, one of the world’s largest oil producers, started rationing petrol nationwide and the Petroleum Ministry has allocated each private car 100 liters per month at 108 cents per liter for normal and 151 cents for super petrol.

The quota for governmental cars has been put at 300 liters per month and for taxis at 800.

Vaziri-Hamaneh said the remaining 15 percent of the public need would be addressed within the next two months, during which the necessary information would be collected.

Seyyed Emad Hosseini, the rapporteur of the Energy Committee of Majlis, also said the government would amend the gasoline rationing and provide the motorists and motorcyclists with the commodity according to their real needs within the next two months.

The minister said the rationing plan had great benefits, arguing that it would help optimize and reduce the consumption of gasoline.

He said 53 to 54 million liters of petrol were used in the country Monday, adding the figure had previously soared to 82 and even 90 million liters per day.

He added the advantages of rationing outnumbered its problems, referring to reduction of air pollution, traffic, and gasoline consumption as the main benefits of the newly enforced law.


Iran gasoline consumption rises

The gasoline consumption stood at 54.8 million liters on Friday which was increased to 58 million liters on Tuesday, the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), reported here on Wednesday.

According to the report, totally 273.7 million liters of gasoline was used from Friday to Tuesday.
