EUROASIA: Russia introduces to parliament draft law on establishing state-run atomic energy corporation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has introduced to the Russian State Duma a draft law on establishing a state-run atomic energy corporation Rosatom, a REGNUM correspondent is told at the secretariat of the Russian State Committee for power engineering, transport and communications today.

Besides, a concomitant draft law was introduced on amending certain bills in connection with adoption of the law on establishing Rosatom, the state-run atomic energy corporation.

As it was reported earlier, the Russian president announced necessity to establish the corporation in his annual address to the Federal Assembly. According to the president, to implement the task of “the second electrification of the country” it is necessary to establish a company that would function as a single centralized management of the nuclear industry.

The Federal Atomic Energy Agency hopes that the draft law will be considered at the autumn session of the parliament, in this case the bill is expected to be adopted in November-December. So, the corporation can be established as early as in January 2008. Its structure will include scientific institutions, the nuclear weapons complex, and nuclear safety organizations as well as newly established Atomenergoprom that includes companies of the civil atomic engineering industry. Restructuring the industry is to be completed by January 2008.
