INDIA: Indian goverment still a part of IPI pipe project

New Delhi says it is still a part of the 7.4-billion-dollar pipeline project aimed to transfer Iran's natural gas to India via Pakistan.

"We have never said that we are pulling out of the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) project. We are part of the project and will continue pursuing import of gas from Iran through the three-nation pipeline," India's Petroleum Secretary M.S. Srinivasan said.

The official, however, underlined reaching the pact on the IPI project is conditioned to resolving the problems on the transit fees with Pakistan.

"We have told Iran clearly that we want to settle the transit fee issue with Pakistan before signing a tri-nation pipeline deal," he stated, according to Press Trust of India.

Srinivasan expressed hope that India be able to settle transit issues with Pakistan after its presidential elections.

Iran and Pakistan held talks last week over the pipeline project in the absence of India. They finalized a deal on late Friday. The two countries are planning to finalize the deal by November.
