Power equipment manufacturer, AREVA Transmission & Distribution (T&D) division on Monday laid the foundation stone of its power transformer factory to be built in Gujarat at an estimated cost of Euro 35 million (nearly Rs 210 crore).
The new manufacturing facility would directly employ 500 people at full capacity and indirectly hire over 3,000 through creation of supply chain and vendor base, a statement from Areva said.
Vadodara is an ideal manufacturing base as it had an efficient supplier portfolio, the company said, adding it expected the first transformer to be due for delivery by December 2008.
Areva had planned the new facility in view of the increased demand for power transmission lines due to the growing potential for super thermal and mega power projects, it said.
"Thus the scope of additional generation capacity is at least 20,000 MW per year, which in turn means a demand of 120,000 MVA additional capacity per year from the perspective of the transformers business," the release said.
The company said India's current installed generation capacity was around 130,000 MW and the Centre was targeting to add another 225,000 MW by the end of 12th Five Year Plan.
"AREVA T&D India contributes to around 12 per cent of the company's overall revenue, with the aim of increasing this to 20 per cent... now working toward a market expansion plan in this segment, especially given the growing power demand in India and export potential," the release said.
