In a bid to boost energy security, Lithuania wants two new nuclear reactors to be up and running within the next seven years. The EU obliges the Ignalina power plant's last Soviet-era units - considered unsafe by western standards - to be shut down less than three years from now.

Lituania, Estonia, Letonia y Polonia se están planteando crear una coraza energética para no sufrir cortes en su suministro, muy dependiente de Rusia. Así Lituania, que se ha comprometido a cerrar dentro de dos años el último reactor de la central nuclear de Ignalina, quiere abrir dos reactores nuevos en 2015.
